Round 5 Match Report

20/05/2017

Lord & Master Barber Reserves

Saturday saw as back at the den after a week off and probably timing couldn't have been better as it gave us a week to ponder the unacceptable football we dished up the week before in a loss to Hallam that taught us a lesson but also one we need to forget. Doveton at home and the sun was shining. Having good players in both Seniors and Reserves I knew this would be a task but one which if we mentally stayed on the job we were capable of. We've shown we can beat undermanned sides and although a wins good all round we are measured when we beat sides that are capable. To be competitive against decent opposition is what's required and shows development. With Nigel Scott back in the side and Danny Gatt back in the middle it was a balanced side from front to back. We got out to a good lead early and then let ourselves down with some undisciplined actions and just patchy football that saw us at half time only hold a slender lead which we knew and agreed was just a letdown and wasteful . I let the boys know this and questioned their character and they responded in a resounding fashion. We went out lowered our eyes and played footy on our terms and had structure and numbers again. The last quarter was the same as we banged on the goals and kept the basics in check. Gatty was damaging all day , Stirlo bobbed up and kicked 3 nursing some bad ribs , JP was providing a good sweeping role across half back , Dicker was crashing packs after disruptions from a knee and our runners were winning the footy and using great link up options. Dingas was great switching from a half back to a half forward and Tank was terrific all day and in the 3rd time I thought swayed the game back to our terms with his hustle and bustle and together with Gatty became too strong . Rhys went well all day in ruck and all in all it was 22 combined for a terrific win and eventual running off to the tune of 10 goals. Couldn't be happier boys and it's in our hands how we want to finish as a group. Consistency is most important and there's another game to win this Saturday on the table. See you on the track and let’s make it two on the trot.

Riviera Hotel Seniors

Senior side was very competitive on Saturday going down to Doveton by 30 points. Our first half was reasonable, the third quarter was much better with some great individual efforts keeping us in the game. The back 6 lead by Gagey were very good, Then the wheels started to fall off in the last quarter and Doveton got out to almost 11 goal lead and it looked like a winnable game was going to be a huge blowout. To our boys credit we switch back on and we really dominated the clearances and piled on 6 quick goals JK was unstoppable bagging 4 for the quarter and 6 for the game.

I have no doubt in my mind this was a missed opportunity to take a big scalp! Some very costly basic mistakes in the backline gave up several easy goals in the first half that along with some undisciplined acts mid field also contributed to the loss.

We have proven on many occasions that when we switch on and follow instructions we can be very competitive.

We can be please that we never gave in! However we lost the game, at some stage we need to hurt after a close loss.

Let's bounce back today and have a great win.
